KIDS DAY AT THE US OPEN IN NY

"Again this year TAS youth program participants took NYC, not by storm, but by bus. On Saturday August 25th the youth traveled free to the Tournament in Flushing, New York. Coordinated by Maurice Patterson, the day trip was filled  with celebrities, music and treats. Young people from all over the world crowded the grounds of Billy Jean King Tennis Center getting tennis tips from the pros, competing in fun drills, and partying with their favorite stars. Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Andy Roddick and other top pros showed off their tennis talents.  This year Kat De Luna, The Jonas Brothers, and Lil' Mama the headlined the free festival show. "

REMEMBERING LAST YEAR

TAS Gets Community Award

Last year, 2006, was a whirlwind of activity for the Tennis Club. The calendar was filled with tennis parties, a kickoff reception, tennis competitions, expanded instruction to two city neighborhood sites, outings to the local Legg Mason Tourney, and climaxing with a trip for 45 kids and family members to the US Open in New York.
The Mid Atlantic Tennis Association (USTA) recognized Tennis At Tennis for its excellent programming with its Community Service Award at its annual awards banquet at the Falls Church Marriott on November 15, 2006.

Family Fun Tennis

A program of Saturday winter tennis lessons and exercise at the Shiloh Family Life Center was designed and implemented by Maurice Patterson and Richard King last season. The program featured free lessons from February through April. A few of the kids who participated were as young as four years old, while some of the teens and adult players had over five years of experience.

Doris Berry

This spring, Doris resigned her position as Director of Tennis At Shiloh after many years of invaluable service, but not before over 50 of her friends swatted balls, sang karaoke, and ate cake at Mt. Vernon Racket Club at a January surprise birthday party. Maurice Patterson will serve as Acting Director until the Church makes its permanent appointment.

Kick Off Reception

The Washington tennis community including TAS founders and past officers gathered at the Shiloh Family Life Center for a formal season kickoff in March 2006.  The James Zimmerman jazz quartet guaranteed an enjoyable evening for every one.

Summer Instruction at Langdon

Because of construction at Banneker, summer instruction and play commenced for the first time at Langdon Recreation Center at 18th and Hamlin Streets in Northeast Washington beginning in May 2006. After serious lobbying from a federation of community organizations led by TAS and Howard University Tennis, Banneker courts were renovated and brought on line in late July.  The eight public courts have become one of the most popular tennis sites in the city.

TAS Competitive Teams

TAS Competitive Teams fielded several teams participating in the summer WATL & META leagues played at Haines Point.  Men’s team captains, Sam Jamison, (4.0), Ted Hardy, (3.5), Derrick Washington, (3.0), and women’s captains, Kelly Patterson & Ellen Collins, (3.5), Sharon Sellers (3.0) led teams through a season rewarded by a mix of success and challenge.

The Shiloh Open

The Shiloh Open is one of the oldest and largest metropolitan area USTA Sanctioned community tournaments and is one of the best opportunities to play or watch the best in local tennis competition and talent.  Because of the repairs at Banneker, the storied tournament was held at Takoma Recreation Center and Turkey Thicket Recreation Center last year.

Rev. Houston Johnson 1/10/18 – 11/26/06

The members of Tennis At Shiloh wish to recognize and remember a great soldier for Christianity, Shiloh, and the greater church community. Rev. Houston Johnson who passed away on November 26, 2006 was also a founder, strong supporter, and dedicated tennis instructor for TAS.

At Shiloh Rev. Johnson’s impact was immense.  He founded Shiloh’s Boy Scout Troop and was a mentor, role model, and spiritual leader to almost anyone in his presence.  Along with Sam Burroughs and eighteen others he founded Tennis At Shiloh in 1976 as missionary outreach organization to the Northwest Washington community. He recruited, taught, and played with equal amounts of energy and excellence.  He will be sorely missed on Court One at Banneker this summer.
