TAS CRUSADERS BESTED BY ACTIVE ACES IN JTT SPRING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Active Aces Super Juniors defeated The TAS Green Crusaders in the 18&U division to advance to the Section JTT championship scheduled for August 8th and 9th at the Tennis Center at College Park. This event will include championship teams from West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia.
While the TAS Crusaders lost, several performances should be highlighted. Sydney Porter played a long and hard girls singles match but had to retire suffering a surprise asthma episode. Brett Tilman won his boys singles match coming back from being a set down displaying true court mastery over a worthy opponent Deondra Jackson of Active Aces. DeOndre Owens and Richard King continued to enhance their reputation as a formidable doubles team allowing their opponents only three games dispatching their opponents in straight sets. The rivalry continues!

TAS JUNIORS WIN FALL CHAMPIONSHIP
This past fall the Tennis At Shiloh Green Crusaders 18 & Under Team beat the Active Aces team in the Championships held at East Potomac Tennis Center, winning 3 matches to 2, and 26 games to 24. While all of the Crusaders played hard in tough matches, Sydney Porter and Richard King III put in exceptional performances during the season.
Porter played singles, mixed, and sometimes girls’ doubles, winning four of the six matches she played. Although King lost his first match in a tight tiebreaker, he won the next four he played. All team members rose to challenges they faced to bring home the team victory. TAS is forming three new Jr. Team Tennis teams for children between the ages of 7-18. QUICKSTART
TENNIS GETS KIDS MOVING. |
TAS will use quickstart tennis a new tennis format starting in
summer, 2008. It’s a new way for kids 10 & under
to learn and play the game. The court sizes, the racquet
sizes, the balls, the scoring system, even the net height has been
adjusted to ease kid’s entry into the sport. And when
all these elements are used together, it truly works. Any child
between ages five and ten can start playing tennis almost immediately,
even if he or she has never picked up a racquet before.
Plus, just like other popular sports
with youth versions, the quickstart
format stresses the importance of play
and team competition. And since most
kids love team sports, this new format is now part of the USTA
Jr. Team Tennis league. Kids
will now have the opportunity to play
with their friends while developing
their skills.
NEW WEEKDAY TAS/DPR YOUTH PROGRAM AT BANNEKER
The Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with TAS, will offer a weekday summer program of tennis, softball and academics at Banneker Recreation Center this summer. Initiated by DC City Council Person Harry Thomas and Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Thomas KD Smith, and led by Executive Director Melissa Johnson, the seven-week program will start two weeks after public school ends. Call DC Parks and Recreation at 202-671-0295 for more information.
